Abel resigns as Happy Valley girls basketball coach

Happy Valley athletic director Matt Estep confirmed Tuesday that Lady Warriors basketball coach Larry Abel Jr. has resigned from his position.
Abel’s resignation comes after six years over the Happy Valley girls basketball program and a year after the Lady Warriors won the 2017 District 1-AA Tournament.
During Abel’s stint, the Lady Warriors had two players break the all-time career scoring record, several 20-plus win seasons, and a Johnson City Honda Tournament tournament title. Four players from each of Abel’s first four years with the Lady Warriors have gone on to play ball at the collegiate level.
“After much thought and prayer, I decided to step down as coach,” said Abel. “At this time, I plan to focus on my upcoming marriage, family, and other things in my life.
“I have been blessed to have the opportunity to coach at my alma mater, and I will always cherish this time. All of our accomplishments were made possible through all of the hard and dedication all of the current and former Lady Warrior players and my assistant coaches have put in.
“I will always be a Warrior for life, and I can truly say that being head coach of the Lady Warriors has been one of the greatest experiences of my life”
