A partnership between the City of Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department and the Carter County Parks and Recreation Board is seeing strides being made to benefit the residents of the area.

Elizabethton City Council will vote on a pair of measures Thursday evening that involve Riverside Park and the potential addition of another park off Gap Creek Road.

Council will vote on the measure to approve $4,000 of funding toward a $50,000 goal to acquire 9.2 acres of land off of Gap Creek Road to be developed into a park for community use.

According to information provided by City Parks & Rec Director Mike Mains, both departments worked closely to identify the property, which is intended to be used for different features, including a softball or baseball field, athletic field, picnic pavilions, a walking trail and a dog park.

Carter County officials recently voted to pay $46,000 of the intended price for the land.

If approved by Council, Mains indicated the department would work closely with the county to develop a master plan for the site. City Parks & Rec will also be in contention to maintain the park once developed. County officials have also indicated that they will seek grants and private funding for additional development.

Both Parks & Rec outlets are also working together for playground equipment usage. City officials recently removed playground equipment from Riverside Park, which had been installed in 1990. As work continues to place new equipment at the site, which is providing more activities for visitors according to Mains, Council will look at the measure of voting to donate the discarded equipment to County Parks & Rec.

According to Mains, the county would use the items and attempt to restore the equipment for future public use.

Weather has played a factor into the installation of new equipment at the Riverside site, but city workers were at the location Wednesday afternoon helping prepare the site for equipment installation.
