Area children are invited to get a little educational time with Santa Claus before Christmas.
City of Elizabethton Parks and Recreation is continuing the holiday barrage of events with the third annual “Story Time With Santa” on Thursday, Dec. 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City Recreation Center.
Free and open to the public, Program and Special Events Coordinator Kelly Kitchens said the event is offered for families to get into the holiday spirit, while encouraging reading opportunities.
“For three years now, we’ve been able to grow this event just from the community support we’ve received,” Kitchens told the Elizabethton Star Tuesday. “UT – Extension provides refreshments and children have the chance to spend time with Santa. Children will also receive a free book from the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library during the event, while supplies last.”
Thursday’s event will feature a bevy of activities, including the storytime, free inflatables, mike and cookies, and other games and activities. Parents also are encouraged to take Christmas photos during the event with Santa Claus taking some time at the conclusion to spend time with children.
Offering events like the storytime help keep interest alive and going for different events in the community, according to Kitchens. Parks & Rec was able to reap the benefits of the inaugural “Christmas at Covered Bridge Park” with thousands stopping by to take part in the events.
“This is an event we want to build on for next year, but we’re looking for those gaps during the year to offer different programs and events,” Kitchens said following the Covered Bridge event. “We want to continue offering these events that can be for all ages.”
