Daniel Edwin Britt (Danny to his family and Dan to his friends), born February 16, 1959, of Utica, Ky., formerly of Elizabethton, passed away on December 3, 2017, leaving a hole in the hearts of so many friends and family who loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Amy Callis Britt, and the light of his life, their son, James Edwin Britt (“Jeb”) of Utica, Ky.; his mother, Carole Britt Hayes and step-father, Steve Hayes of Johnson City, Tenn.; his sister, Cindy Britt Ferguson, and brother-in-law, Marty Ferguson of Cary, N.C.; two nieces, Reese and Bennett Ferguson, his uncle and aunt, John and Beverly Britt of Valrico, Fla.; his aunt, Christa Bare of Nashville, Tenn.; his first cousins, Debbie Pouder (Bill), Clay Bare (Helen), Joanne Tindall (Billy), and Stephen Bare. He is also survived by many cousins, dear friends from over the years and his co-workers at Southwest Airlines.
Danny was preceded in death by his father, Harlis Edwin (“Ed”) Britt; his father-in-law, Dr. James Callis; his mother-in-law, Nelda Boggess Callis; his maternal grandmother, Myrtle Bare; his paternal grandmother, Hazel Britt; his uncles, Charles Britt and Clay Bare; a wonderful welcoming crew who were there to greet him.
Danny had a heart of gold, a man that would literally give you the shirt off his back (despite his sister begging him to be more sensible). He was first and foremost a husband and a father; perhaps the proudest father this world has ever known. His son, Jeb, was his everything (and rightfully so, he is a fine young man who will make his father proud for years to come). Danny was perhaps the best pilot to ever fly the skies. Those who were lucky enough to have him pilot their plane over the years were certainly in good hands. He loved to fly, following in the footsteps of his father and his Uncle John. He really loved anything that would go fast, including his Harley-Davidson motorcycles, which he loved to ride on trips every October with his friends. He was also an excellent cook. He took great joy in preparing a meal for his friends and family.
Danny was a handsome man and a kind soul. He was keenly intelligent and could build anything (and would often take even working machinery apart just for the chance to put it back together). He even built airplanes with his Dad and maintained a small fleet of planes at his home in Kentucky. When he wasn’t flying passengers for Southwest Airlines, Danny lived on a beautiful farm in Utica, Ky., with his wife, Amy, and son, Jeb. Part of his heart was always in Tennessee though where he loved to spend time on the farm he kept in Carter County. He was a hometown boy, raised in Elizabethton, Tenn., where he remains a member of the First United Methodist Church. He graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1977, and attended East Tennessee State University. He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper and learned to jump out of those planes he would eventually learn to fly. Before becoming a pilot, Danny worked for North American Rayon Corporation for many years. At the time of his death, Danny was a proud member of Southwest Airlines, piloting passenger jets.
A service to honor the life of Daniel Edwin Britt (Danny) will be conducted at 12 p.m. Thursday, December 7, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Raymond W. Amos Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday. Private graveside services will be conducted in the Patton-Simmons Cemetery. To say that our world is devastated by the loss of such a great man is an understatement. He will be dearly missed by all who had an opportunity to meet him and will be loved throughout eternity. Until we meet again Danny… Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to First United Methodist Church, 325 East E Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643 or to the charity of your choice.
