Businesses band together for community-based projects

During the month of December, a handful of businesses in the Elk Crossing Shopping Center are doing their part to give back to those in need.
Representatives from Shoe Sensation, Factory Connection and United Grocery Outlet joined outside the businesses to offer a variety of treats with funds going to benefit Cap the Gap, a foster care organization benefiting children in Carter, Washington and Unicoi counties.
Nancy Berry with Shoe Sensation said that proceeds raised at the station will go to purchase items to place in stockings for children’s needs that was provided from the organization.
During the afternoon, the representatives sold various items, including home goods, doggie bags, a trip to Doe River Inn, Dollywood passes and refreshments provided by Food City stores from Elizabethton and Piney Flats.
“There are so many children that are having a tough time this holiday season,” Berry said. “We’re selling these products to provide children different things they want for Christmas.”
Cap the Gap works with social workers to gather a list of foster families with needs. Once a list is comprised, the organization seeks sponsors to help give the items needed for the wish list.
Berry added that donations can still be accepted to purchase items. The proceeds will have to be presented to Cap the Gap by Dec. 19.
While the businesses stayed busy outside, Shoe Sensation has their own special project underway.
An annual tradition, the store is now accepting hats, socks and caps that will be presented to active military members.
“It’s a project that means a lot to me,” Berry said. “Our troops do so much for us and this is something we want to do to give back.”
Patrons can stop by the store to purchase items, which will be accepted by the store. Individuals can also donate goods to the store during regular business hours.
Shoe Sensation’s drive is going throughout the remainder of the month. Individuals wanting to assist with either project can do so by stopping by Shoe Sensation or calling (423) 543-1126.
