Achievements recognized by BOE

The 2017-18 academic year has been kind for Elizabethton City Schools.
City Board of Education members were able to hear updates on current projects, and ideas for others during Tuesday’s meeting, which included a quick recap of a weekend achievement announced by the state.
Tennessee Department of Education Commissioner Dr. Candice McQueen announced Friday that a bevy of schools across the state were able to receive “Reward School” status while others were highlighted for their continual improvement in the classroom.
“These schools represent what is possible for students in Tennessee as they exemplify excellence in performance or progress and in some cases, both,” said McQueen in a statement. “We want to replicate this success across the state and continue to celebrate the hard work of our educators and students happening in classrooms every day.”
Along with individual acknowledgment, ECS was also named an Exemplary District by the state for the work in the classrooms.
City Director of Schools Dr. Corey Gardenhour that staff, students, administration and community members during Tuesday’s meeting for their support.
One of the key cogs of progress include the students involved with the Bartleby Program at Elizabethton High School, which received an update from director Terry Smith.
An idea that is being shuffled down the pipeline is a fundraiser initiative outfit the walkway into Elizabethton High School to be utilized for students expressing interest in the arts.
According to the director, the arts at the high school, ranging from drama to the the Betsy Band, have been thoroughly used in high capacity by students.
Locally, Bartleby students have used their bit of artistic flair, working with downtown merchants to help beautify the area.
