Frightful Delight: Downtown Elizabethton coming alive for Halloween season

Residents coming through downtown are getting familiar with some of the fall season’s regular visitors.
They aren’t exactly talkative or mobile, but they add some flair to the area.
Roughly 30 scarecrows are scattered throughout Historic Downtown Elizabethton for the annual Downtown Business Association scarecrow competition.
“We’re so impressed with the scarecrows that are on display, said DBA President Cathy Shoun. “It looks so great through downtown. We’ve also had a lot of feedback and compliments on the scarecrows on social media, either on Facebook or Twitter.”
There’s still time to participate in this year’s scarecrow competition, Shoun added. Judging takes place Saturday, Oct. 28, and the three top scarecrows with be recognized by the organization.
Last year’s winner was Covered Bridge Cafe, while Ivy Hall and Security Federal Bank were also recognized for their unique decorations.
“It was a great event,” Shoun told the Elizabethton Star after last year’s event. “It’s always great to go through downtown and see the different designs at each column. Everything went great, and we’re hoping to see more growth next year.”
Shoun added that businesses wanting to participate, free of charge, can do so by stopping by the Dressing Room, located downtown, during regular business hours.
Even though the scarecrows will be around for a couple more weeks, expect some little monsters to visit downtown at the end of the month.
The DBA is offering their annual trick-or-treating Halloween Celebration Tuesday, Oct. 31, on the downtown strip from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
“It is so great to see the participation for the Halloween event,” Shoun said. “We’re very appreciative for all the support.”
Elizabethton Parks & Rec and the public library offer some extra fun for attendees with inflatables set up downtown. A popular attraction for the event is the annual costume contest. Kelly Kitchens, with Parks & Rec, encouraged interested participated to meet near the war memorial, across from Blue River Studio, downtown during the celebration between 4:15 to 4:30 p.m.
More information on upcoming events will be included in future print editions of the Elizabethton Star. Individuals are also encouraged to visit the Elizabethton Downtown Business Association Facebook page online to see updates on what the businesses are up to throughout the year.
