A Roan Mountain man faces multiple felony charges following an investigation into an alleged domestic violence incident where he reportedly chased a woman into a home, threatened two people with a firearm, and then fired two shots into the residence.

Deputies of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office arrested Lucus Elijah Peterson, 20, of 160 William Brewer Road, Roan Mountain, on Sunday on warrants charging him with aggravated domestic assault, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, aggravated burglary, and the unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon.

The charges against Peterson stem from an investigation by the CCSO into an incident at a home on Price Road in the western part of the county on Sept. 12.

According to court documents, deputies responded to the home on Price Road on a report of a domestic altercation where shots had been fired. When officers arrived at the scene, they spoke with the residents of the home — Thelma Lovelace and Paul Clark — who reported they heard a “commotion” outside and a male, later identified as Peterson, and a female, later identified as Cortney McCallum, came into their home without consent.

“They said that Peterson had a gun and was waving it around and pointing it at Mrs. McCallum,” CCSO Investigator Travis Ludlow said. “They said that Mrs. McCallum hid behind Paul Clar, at which point Peterson pointed the gun at Mr. Clark and began threatening him.”

Lovelace and Clark told officers they told Peterson to leave and he walked outside and then fired two shots through the front door of the home.

McCallum told officers she was in a relationship with Peterson and they had been arguing inside a car.

“She said that he began hitting her in the head with a pistol while they were driving, and ended up at the residence on Price Road where he fired a shot inside the car,” Ludlow said. “She stated that she ran inside for help and that he chased her.”

Ludlow noted the woman had injuries to her face which were bleeding and she had a large swollen lump above her left eye.

A check of Peterson’s record showed that he is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing a firearm, Ludlow said.

Peterson appeared in Carter County General Sessions Court on Monday morning to be arraigned on the charges against him. Judge Keith Bowers Jr. appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent Peterson, set his bond at $5,000, and scheduled him to return to court on Oct. 17.
