COSBY – A dominating first-half performance by Happy Valley enabled the Warriors to stay unbeaten with a 61-0 victory over the Cosby Eagles on Friday night at Virgil Ball Stadium.
The Warriors (4-0, 2-0 conference) held the Eagles to 17 yards of total offense in the first half as HV rolled to a 42-0 halftime advantage. Sophomore tailback Will Tittle rushed for 105 yards on 10 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 4 and 19 yards.
Happy Valley scored on its first possession, traveling 50 yards on five plays with junior quarterback Brayden Sams scoring from 1 yard out. After forcing a three-and-out, HV moved 58 yards on eight plays for a 12-0 lead when Tittle scored on a 4-yard run.
“Coach Hall and his staff do a great job,” Warriors head coach Jason Jarrett said. “We knew we had to come in and play real hard to win a conference game. We are trying to take it one step at a time in these conference games, and Cosby was one more step on the ladder. Every conference game is extremely important, and our goal is to finish out the conference and I am proud of the effort our guys showed tonight.”
Cosby was unable to move the ball on the ground and senior quarterback Andrew Lillard was zero-for-four passing. The Eagles managed just 11 ground yards against a stingy Warriors defense. The only successful pass play for Cosby came on a 6-yard halfback pass from Darien Johnson back to Lillard but the Eagles were stopped a yard short of a first down.
The HV defense got into the scoring column when junior linebacker Dakota Cochran picked up a Cosby fumble and rumbled 32 yards for the score. Sophomore Jordan Campbell had a pair of touchdown runs in the first half.
The first was a 9-yard burst which was followed by a 2-point run from Tittle and the second was a 6-yard run that gave HV a 35-0 lead.
“We block hard and they run hard,” said senior lineman Landon Morefield. “They run with a lot of effort and on defense, we got numbers to the ball which was our game plan coming in. For me, I don’t care if I play offense or defense, I just love to smack people, and I love being on the field.”
The Warriors scored three times in the second half with Sams scoring on a 19-yard scamper, senior Luke Roberts had a 30-yard scoring run and freshman Gabe Nickles had an 11-yard scoring run.
