Commission to tackle chairman, committee appointments on Monday

When members of the Carter County Commission meet on Monday, they will select a chairman for the group and decide on committee appointments.
Each year during the September meeting of the county’s governing body the group selects a chairman to preside over their meetings as well as a vice-chairman to fill the role at times.
During the Commission meeting in September 2016, members of the Commission nominated Carter County Mayor Leon Humphrey and Commissioner Dr. Robert Acuff for the position of Chairman. When the votes were cast, 12 commissioners voted for Humphrey and 12 voted for Acuff. In the event of a tie, the presiding chairman is called upon to break the tie. Humphrey was named the chairman of the Commission after casting his tie-breaking vote for himself.
Commissioners will also be called up on Monday to approve appointments to the groups standing committees. The Commission has three groups of standing committees, and each of the county’s eight districts has one representative on each of the committee slates.
Last year during the committee appointment process, only two districts — the 1st and 3rd — changed up their representations on the committees.
The current committee appointments are as follows:
Budget and Nominating Committees: Dr. Robert Acuff (1st), Al Meehan (2nd), Ronnie Trivett (3rd), L.C. Tester (4th), Ross Garland (5th), John Lewis (6th), Sonja Culler (7th), and Robert Carroll (8th).
Highway, Education, and Landfill Committees: Buford Peters (1st), Mike Hill (2nd), Charles VonCannon (3rd), Danny Ward (4th), Bobbie Gouge-Dietz (5th), Larry “Doc” Miller (6th), Scott Simerly (7th), and Kelly Collins (8th).
Buildings & Grounds, Rules & Bylaws, Health & Welfare, and Law Enforcement Committees: Willie Campbell (1st), Nancy Brown (2nd), Bradley Johnson (3rd), Isaiah Grindstaff (4th), Timothy Holdren (5th), Randall Jenkins (6th), Ray Lyons (7th), and Cody McQueen (8th).
The Commission will also appoint four of its members to serve on the Financial Management Committee with Carter County Mayor Leon Humphrey, Road Superintendent Roger Colbaugh, and Director of Carter County Schools Dr. Kevin Ward. Currently, VonCannon, Ward, Gouge-Dietz, and Lyons serve on that committee.
In addition to selecting a chairman and setting committee appointments, members of the Commission will consider a number of other items of business including the bylaws for the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter, a new operating agreement between the county and the City of Elizabethton regarding the animal shelter, adopting a fund balance policy for the count, and several resolutions naming bridges in honor of notable citizens.
The Carter County Commission will meet on Monday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. in the courtroom located on the second floor of the Carter County Courthouse.
