A quick glance on Facebook and social media and anyone can see that the Unaka Rangers football team is hard at work as the 2017 season closes in.
This year, 7-on-7 sessions have been one of the many workouts the Rangers have been doing to get ready for their first season under head coach O’Brien Bennett.
Thursday evening, the Rangers hosted Trinity Christian and Holston to the Creek for some 7-on-7. Over their summer workouts, the Rangers have played in 7-on-7s at Hampton, Sullivan North, Sullivan Central, and Holston.
Stepping in at the quarter back position is junior John “Boy” Ramsey on the first team and Will Sexton on the second team.
“Both of those guys are getting a ton of reps and are learning a lot,” said Bennett “That is the big thing for us right now. We want to get out here and learn from our mistakes. We will come out and run a play four times in a row until we get it right. That is what 7-on-7 is for us, perfecting what we do.”
At the receiver position, Unaka will have some returners along with some new players.
“We have some young guys, and we have some new guys,” said Bennett “We have Blake Isaacs returning from last year. He is a sophomore. We have Devon Jarrett, who is a junior, and both of those guys can fly.
“We have a new guy in Reed Taylor who is going to be junior,” continued Bennett. “This is his first year back with the team. He has stepped up in a really big way for us in our slot receiver position. We have Nick Bowers returning. He is just a sophomore. And we have a freshman in Rodney Watson who has come out and had a break out 7-on-7 performance.”
Bennett said his squad is improving every day which is all that they are focusing on right now as their first game of the season at North Greene on Aug. 18 inches towards kick off.
“We are still correcting things,” “That is the big thing. We are better than the first time that we came out. That has been our goal the whole time to be one day better every day.”
