Police have identified a Carter County man who died as a result of injuries from a motorcycle accident over the weekend.
On Monday afternoon, the Elizabethton Police Department released a statement identifying the man as 30-year-old Dustin D. Curtis, of Watauga.
According to police reports, shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday officers of the Elizabethton Police Department responded to a motorcycle crash on North Lynn Avenue near the intersection of that road with East Mill Street. Once on the scene of the accident, officers discovered Curtis had been operating a 2007 Yamaha F6S motorcycle and was traveling north on North Lynn Avenue.
“Mr. Curtis was negotiating a curve when his motorcycle traveled over a metal storm drain grate located on the right side of the roadway and struck a raised curb,” EPD Capt. Joy Shoun said. “Mr. Curtis continued onto the sidewalk and struck a yellow concrete post.”
“Mr. Curtis was found suffering from critical injuries and was transported by Carter County EMS to the Johnson City Medical Center,” Shoun continued. “Later that evening, officers were advised that Mr. Curtis died from the injuries sustained in the crash.”
The Elizabethton Police Department’s Special Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team was called to the scene to investigate.
“Based on witness statements and evidence recovered at the scene it was determined that the crash did not involve other vehicles,” Shoun said, adding drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash.
Curtis was a firefighter employed with the Elizabethton Fire Department. He had been with the department for just under two years, according to EFD Deputy Chief Rusty Barnett, who said Curtis was hired on June 22, 2015.
