“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Those words from children’s author Dr. Seuss stress the importance of reading, which is what Central Elementary School will be celebrating with the community on Thursday evening.
As part of the school’s Read Across America Celebration staff at Central Elementary will be hosting Dr. Seuss Night in honor of the famed author’s birthday.
“It’s going to be a fun-filled night,” said Assistant Principal Letha Carr.
Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel, is known for his quirky rhyming phrases and a host of memorable characters, perhaps most notably The Cat in the Hat. Over his career, Seuss wrote and illustrated 44 children’s books. Many of those who have read Seuss’s books have their own personal favorite that speaks to them. For Carr, her favorite is “O the Places You’ll Go.”
The school will be serving refreshments as well as providing a variety of activities for families which focus on the importance of literacy skills and reading.
“We are going to have all kinds of games for the kids,” Carr said. “We’re going to have Bingo for Books. Instead of a Cake Walk we’re doing a Book Walk.”
The school will also have gifts for children attending the event.
The program will also feature a special presentation by Dr. John Taylor discussing some of the problems young readers face and strategies for their parents and grandparents to use when working with the children to help them improve their reading skills.
Seuss Night will be held at the school on Thursday, March 2, from 5-7 p.m.
The event is open to everyone in the community, not just families of students who attend Central Elementary, Carr said. There is no cost to attend or take part in any of the activities. “Everything is free,” Carr said.
