A Carter County man faces a felony charge after police say he assaulted his wife during a domestic dispute.
Officers of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office arrested Bill Campbell Jr., 34, of 136 Hillmont Drive, Johnson City, on Monday on a warrant charging him with aggravated assault under domestic violence.
CCSO Deputy Tylor Johnson took out the warrant against Campbell following a domestic disturbance that occurred at Campbell’s home earlier this month.
On Jan. 11, Johnson and CCSO Deputy Paul Morell responded to the home on Hillmont Drive after a 911 caller reported a domestic disturbance at the home.
When the officers arrived on the scene, they spoke with a woman who identified herself as Campbell’s wife. The woman told officers she and her husband were arguing when he grabbed her arm and began yelling at her.
“(She) stated that she kept telling him to stop, she then told him to get out of her vehicle,” Johnson said in the affidavit of complaint against Campbell. “Mr. Campbell refused to get out, so (she) went to grab his backpack which he never leaves or lets out of his sight and throw it out of the car so he would run and get it.
“(She) failed to get the backpack out of the car, that’s when Mr. Campbell said ‘I’ll ring your f****** neck’ and grabbed (her) by the throat,” Johnson added. “(She) stated a struggle broke out while she was attempting to get away.”
The woman told officers Campbell’s sister, Tiffany Miller, and brother-in-law, Jason Scalf, came outside, and when they saw the couple struggling, they attempted to break up the altercation.
“That’s when Mr. Campbell then brandished a black revolver pistol,” Johnson said, adding the woman told officers Scalf then tackled Campbell and Miller took the gun away from him. “Further investigation of the firearm by deputies lead to the firearm being fake.”
Campbell appeared in Carter County General Sessions Court on Tuesday for arraignment. Judge Keith Bowers Jr. lowered Campbell’s bond to $3,000 and ordered him to have no contact with the victim. Bowers scheduled Campbell to return to court on Feb. 17 with an attorney.
