The Lady Warriors found some rhythm Thursday night as they topped the Hampton Lady Bulldogs 62-48 in some non-conference action inside Happy Valley High School.
Lady Warriors Kaitlyn Roberts and Haley Green led the way for Happy Valley as Roberts picked up 16 points and Green recorded 14 points. Green also finished the night with a double-double as she brought down 11 boards.
Roberts, who is a senior, said that teamwork is what made the difference in Thursday’s contest.
“I feel like a team effort is what really helped us win tonight,” Roberts said. “We had a lot of great assists from a lot of people. Our defense was on, and it really helped bring our offense together. I really think that we worked as a team tonight.”
Happy Valley head coach Larry Abel Jr. said that Green has really stepped up for the Lady Warriors at this point in the season.
“Hayley has been doing a lot of the little things for us” said Abel. “She has been one of our top rebounders so far. She has been doing an excellent job for us on defense.”
Late in the first, the Lady Warriors held a small 2-point lead, before Happy Valley’s Kaitlyn Roberts and Kaitlin Depriest came unleashed for eight-straight points, six of which came from the two knocking down back-to-back threes to give HV a 15-7 lead heading into the second frame.
Trailing by eight to start the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs found some momentum as they conducted a 9-2 run to cut Happy Valley’s lead down to 17-16 with 2:57 left in the half. Hampton’s run saw Megan Garland knock down two buckets and Lady Bulldog Kinzey Hill make a basket and one. However, the Lady Warriors picked up steam once again as Roberts and Green led Happy Valley in a 12-1 drive down the first-half stretch with Green and Roberts hitting back-to-back treys to give the Lady Warriors a 28-17 lead at half time.
The Lady Warriors came out with intensity in the second half with a nine-point drive that was capped off with Happy Valley sophomore Baylee McGee sinking a three to push Happy Valley on out to a 37-19. Happy Valley freshman Shalyn Whitson made a basket and one to give her team a 40-19 edge shortly after. The Lady Warriors moved on out to a 42-21 before Hampton’s Stephanie Campbell and Alexus Grubbs made six-straight points to cut HV’s lead to 42-27. The third frame ended with Happy Valley’s Emily Whitaker making a three to give the Lady Warriors a 45-27 lead heading into the final quarter.
The final quarter saw the Lady Bulldogs outscore Happy Valley 21-17 with Shyanne Tuelle making two threes and a bucket in the fourth to help her team’s cause. Grubbs made a three and a two-pointer for the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth. Grubbs ended up leading the Lady ’Dogs with 14 points on the night.
The Lady Warriors will head over to Sullivan North tonight to begin conference play, and the Lady Bulldogs will make a trip to Johnson County Monday.
“We have a goal to be the Three Rivers champs,” Abel said. “And that starts tomorrow night. We have to go out and take care of business.”
