Hampton Elementary School was placed on a lockdown Thursday afternoon following a mistaken report of a firearm on the campus.
The lockdown happened around 12:30 when school officials reacted to the report that a firearm had been found on the campus.
On Wednesday evening, Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford told the Elizabethton Star that no firearm had been found on the campus of the elementary school.
According to Lunceford, someone witnessed a person with a firearm at a property adjacent to the school and reported it.
“It was a mistake,” he said. “There was no one on campus with a firearm.”
Following the report, school officials placed the school on lockdown until the Sheriff’s Office cleared the scene.
“They erred on the side of caution, which is what you want to do,” Lunceford said.
School officials notified the parents and guardians of students about the lockdown.
