With Fall now in the air and the leaves beginning to turn, Doe River Gorge is inviting the community to come enjoy Fall Family Fun Day.
“This is an annual event we have done for the community for many, many years,” said Ken Stoltzfus, Director of Operations of Doe River Gorge.
This special day allows members of the community to visit Doe River Gorge with free admission and enjoy some time with family activities in the great outdoors.
“We want the community to feel welcome in coming here and seeing what activities we have to offer,” Stoltzfus said. “We want this to be kind of an old-fashioned family Fall festival.”
Fall Family Fun Day will be held on Sunday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and lots of activities are available to make the event special and fun for everyone.
There are many free activities available for families to enjoy, such as disc golf, archery for ages 8 and up, sand volleyball, Octaball, horseback riding for ages 4-11, and games of corn hole.
Additional activities are available for a small fee. Visitors can take a train excursion on the historic East Tennessee & Western North Carolina (Tweetsie) Railway site through the beautiful Doe River Gorge, try their skills on the Technical Tree Climb or Climbing Tower, and children ages 2-12 can enjoy inflatable activities at a cost of $5 per activity. Rides on the popular Unimog are available for $10.
“One thing people really enjoy is taking a ride on our train excursion to enjoy the Fall colors,” Stoltzfus said. “Our train rides usually sell out.”
For those who want to enjoy the train excursion, Stoltzfus recommends purchasing train tickets in advance through Doe River Gorge’s website. “That way your seat on the train is assured,” he said.
Food will be available for those in attendance with the choice of burgers, barbeque sandwiches or chicken sandwiches, to go along with chips, a cookie and a drink for $8. Kids Meals will be offered for $4. Snacks will be provided as well, starting at $1.
Meal tickets can also be purchased in advance online, Stoltzfus said, adding advance reservations for the meals helps the camp prepare for the event.
And, in the spirit of a Fall festival, local pumpkins will be available for purchase at the camp for the event.
