Have you ever wanted to ride the West on horseback searching for outlaws or sail the seven seas with a band of swashbuckling pirates? Or perhaps stepping through a wardrobe into a magical world is more your speed?
Whatever your genre, the Friends of the Library Used Book Sale is sure to have something to your liking.
The Friends of the Library fall Used Book Sale will take place on Sept. 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Center located at 300 Mill St. Hardback books will be priced $1 each while paperbacks will cost 50 cents each.
Those who are members of the Friends of Library group will get to take part in special shopping hours before the sale on Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. Membership to the Friends of the Library group is only $10 and interested parties can show up to the sale on Thursday evening and join to take part in the early sale according to Lilo Duncan, of the Friends of the Library.
The books for the sale are donated by members of the group as well as members of the community, Duncan said.
“We have all kinds, all categories,” she said.
Typically, the sale features around 10,000 books donated by the community for the event.
Those wishing to make donations to the used book sale can do so between now and Sept. 20 at the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library. Donations will also be accepted on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Recreation Center.
“Or they can bring the books while the sale is going on,” Duncan said. “A lot of people do that.”
The Friends of the Library group holds used book sales each year — one in the Spring and one in the Fall — as a way to raise funds to help support the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library.
“All the money that is made goes to the library,” Duncan said. “We do the special things that the city and county don’t fund.”
Last year, the Friends group partnered with the City of Elizabethton to fund some much-needed renovations at the library.
“We renovated most of the library,” Duncan said. “Right now we are in the process of buying new chairs for the meeting room.”
The group also helps fund programs at the library such as the children’s reading program.
