City Development: Demo underway for new Dollar General, Cookout still on tap

Construction traffic increased this week near ProSound in Elizabethton as work begins for the installation of a new Dollar General Store.
The site will be the new home for the Dollar General Store currently located on West Elk Avenue near Save-A-Lot. The site will allow the store more room for the future.
“They had the preconstruction meeting last week,” Elizabethton Planning and Development Director Jon Hartman said. “They’ve been working on the demolition of the building on site to get the site ready for construction.”
Workers were busy Wednesday demolishing the former transmission shop that was in place. Along with the demo, workers will also work on sewer and water lines at the location to get the site prepped.
Hartman, who was returning back to the city after a trip to Nashville to recruit potential businesses, told the Elizabethton Star over the phone that once demolition is completed, work will begin on constructing the building.
A tentative timeline of around six months is pegged for the business to assume its new location.
Along with one business moving their location, another is gearing up for a first-time appearance within the city.
With inquiries coming in about the status of Cookout coming to Elizabethton, the director added the fast food chain will be making its way to the area in the near future. The restaurant will be at the building on West Elk that formerly housed Long John Silvers/A&W.
“The site plan actually has been approved,” Hartman said. “Everything is in place, but with restaurants chains like this, it isn’t uncommon to have around six to 12 months of waiting before construction gets underway.”
Hartman added that the status of Cookout was much like the beginning phases of the current Chick-fil-A, where there was a bit of a lengthy wait.
“Once everything gets approved, it is just a matter of time with bigger chains like Chick-fil-A and Cookout,” he said. “We’re sort of just sitting in a line right now, waiting to get to the front when we can get the construction crews in and begin work.”
