As the laundry list of activities provided by the Elizabethton-Carter County Public Library (ECCPL) grows, one of their recent mainstays experienced a bit of growth for this year.
The fourth annual Touch-a-Truck event, sponsored by the ECCPL, Carter County Health Department and Elizabethton Parks and Recreation, is set for Sunday, July 24, at Joe O’Brien Field from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
As the event grew, so did the number of attendees, ECCPL Children’s Librarian Ashlee Williams said, causing a shift of location for this year.
“We’ve done it over at the library for the past few years,” Williams said. “Space wise, the Twins’ field will be a better option because we’ve just been use the back parking lot here.”
Children are encouraged to stop by a see a variety of different vehicles, including a box truck, stand-behind mower, propane truck, police cruiser, fire truck, along with a variety of other mobile items.
“They have a chance to climb around to see the different vehicles,” Williams said. “They also get a chance to see and learn about the different occupations out there.”
Participants will start out with a list and maneuver their way through the premise, receiving check marks by the volunteers with each vehicles. After stopping by each area, children will present their list to Williams to receive a prize.
“Last year, we had officers giving out police books and firefighters giving out books at them,” she said. “This year, we’ll be giving out a multitude of transportation books.”
Also available during the evening will be other goodies, including stickers and temporary tattoos.
Williams also credited the help of the Parks and Recreation Department in their transition of locations.
“We work very closely with the Parks and Recreation Department, they’re our partners in crime,” Williams said with a laugh. “It works out well with the Twins being such a family-friendly atmosphere. We appreciate their help this year and the help of the health department.”
But there’s still some vehicles needed for the event, Williams said, including a limousine, military-type vehicle, and a school bus, among others. Anyone interested in bringing a specialty vehicle has until Sunday. For more information, contact Williams at the ECCPL at 547-6360 or contact Jilian Reece of the health department at 543-2521.
