KINGSPORT – The Elizabethton Cyclones stayed unbeaten in district 1A/AA boys soccer with a 5-1 victory over Sullivan South. EHS (7-1 overall, 6-0 conference) got a pair of goals from senior Daniel Bolognese and sophomore Daniel Raposo-Sanchez and another from freshman Teagan Bernshausen.
Since 2007, the Cyclones had managed only a 3-3 tie in 2014 with the Rebels on their home turf so the Cyclones knew they had to come to play and EHS struck first in the 11th minute. Sanchez took a corner kick and lofted the shot into the penalty area, where it slipped to Bolognese who fired a left footed shot past Rebels goalkeeper Cade Westbrook.
“It was an awesome win,” Sanchez said. “It has been a long time since we won on this field I was told, so it was pretty exciting to get it. I think in the first half we started losing momentum at the end of the half, but we picked it up in the second half.”
In the 21st minute Sanchez got on the board with his seventh goal of the season with an assist from senior Josh Smith on a long throw in pass. Sanchez took possession just inside the box as Smith’s throw sailed over his shoulder, but he broke for the ball with a Rebel defender on his shoulder and beat Westbrook to his left for a 2-0 EHS lead.
The Cyclones scored again in the 30th minute when senior Michael Robinson had a free kick from 30 yards out that found senior Teve Mushayamunda in the box and his nudge pass to Bolognese set him up for a left footed shot that made it 3-0 in favor of the Cyclones.
The Rebels (6-3-1 overall, 3-2-1 conference) struck for a goal in the 34th minute to steal some of the Cyclone thunder as Josh Johnson put a shot in the far corner past EHS goalkeeper Noah Lovelace.
“The only goal they got came on an mistake on my part,” Sanchez said. “I made a bad pass across and he scored. But we are really excited about this win and we hope we can keep it going.”
The Cyclones added to its lead in the 49th minute when Sanchez headed in a goal from a pass made by Mushayamunda to the post. That made it a 4-1 game and Bernshausen also scored on a header on another long throw in pass from Smith.
“The dimensions here don’t always play to our strength,” Cyclones head coach Bill McClay said. “It’s a little short and a little narrow and it’s really bumpy. We started a touch slow in the first 10 minutes and I don’t know what it was, but we came into the game in the second 10 minutes when we put those goals on the board.
“And then unfortunately, we gave the ball away in the middle of the field and that gave them a chance to score and they did. I think it gave them a little momentum, you always want the shutout, but I was pleased we scored off so many set pieces.”
The Cyclones are home today with a non conference match against Tri-Cities Christian with game time set at 5 pm.
