The presidential primary may be behind us, but the time is nearing to elect three candidates for the Carter County Soil Conservation District (CCSCD) Board of Supervisors.
“After the Great Depression, following conditions with the Dust Bowl, Congress and states felt they had to do something to protect soil and improve water quality,” said Douglas Richardson, CCSCD office manager. “We administer programs and projects to improve croplands, hay lands, soil and water quality on farms.”
The district offers several cost sharing programs for farmers to ensure they have adequate, high-quality arable land.
Three positions on the five-member board are open, with terms expiring for current members Bill Birchfield, Gereel Cable and Jamie Hughes.
These three are running for re-election, each for three year terms. Also running for election are Brenda Loyd, Michael Hazelwood and Jamie Clark. Loyd is a cattle producer and member of the Carter County Cattleman’s Association. Hazelwood, son of Ronnie Hazelwood, is a dairyman on the Siam Dairy Farm. Clark is a tobacco farmer who was previously on the Sullivan and Carter County Farm Service Agency Committee.
Only voters that own property in Carter County are legally allowed to vote.
Elections will be held on Tuesday, March 8, at the CCSCD Office at 419 W. Elk. Ave. Ste. 2 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Additional voting locations, open from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. include:
