Materials often found lying around the house went soaring through the air Friday at Roan Mountain State Park. Ranger Amanda Smithson walked children through the process of making a kite with goldrenrod stems, newspaper, tape, streamers and a stick as a spool for the string. Park guests joined Smithson at the Miller Farmstead Overlook before taking off down the runway with their kite creations. “It’s a good day to be doing this,” Nathan Johnson said. “It is windy.”
