Annual Chamber canceled due to low numbers

The Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Dinner has been canceled, and low pre-registration numbers are to blame.
The dinner was scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ole Barn Restaurant. The $50 ticket price included dinner from the Ole Barn and entertainment by local band Daisi Rain.
The chosen date conflicted with other events that were already planned for the area, Chamber Director Tonya Stevens said Tuesday.
“We just haven’t had the numbers up until this point,” Stevens said. “It was a bad time to do it. There are a lot of things going on with graduations and awards ceremonies. It was a difficult time to try to do this.”
Early feedback from potential dinner attendees indicated scheduling conflicts kept them from attending the Annual Dinner, she said.
“The people I heard from said they had previous events or they would be out of town,” Stevens said. “No one had made any comments about the (price of) tickets or the venue.”
A rescheduled date for the dinner has not been set. Chamber leaders were still looking at options for the dinner.
“We are looking at whether it will be feasible to do this when there is less going on,” Stevens said. “In the initial planning stages, we didn’t realize it was a bad time to try to do this.”
The dinner was also scheduled as the Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting.
The meeting, when it is held, will be hosted by outgoing president Melanie Stanton, who will pass the gavel to the new Chamber president.
