Powell Lee Ellis, 70, of Elizabethton, passed away Friday, May 1, 2015, at his residence following an extended illness.
Powell was a native of Carter County and a 1963 graduate of Elizabethton High School. He was a retired employee of the City of Elizabethton in the Waste Water Treatment Plant. Prior to that he was employed at Beaunit Fibers for over 29 years.
Powell was a lifetime member of the Carter County Rescue Squad and had served in the Rescue Squad for 45 years. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Rescue Squad. He was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238. He was a faithful participant of the Elizabethton Car Club and a member of Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mabel Ellis Birchfield, and a brother, Randall Birchfield.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Gloria Shipley Ellis; two children, Melissa Hodge and husband Russell and David Ellis and wife Rhonda, all of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Michael Hodge and wife Rebekah and Emily Hodge; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Maddux Hodge; a brother, Kim Birchfield and wife Tammy, Elizabethton; two sisters, Judy Kuhn and husband Bill and Peggy Holly and husband Jack; a sister-in-law, Jennifer Birchfield; his aunts, Selda Wilson, Juanita White and Gladys Nance-Hicks; a special cousin, Doris Turner; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Powell Lee Ellis will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mark Street officiating. Music will be provided by Patty Hodge. The entombment service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 7, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, will be Steve Burrough, Michael Hodge, Jim Burrough, Claude Buchanan, Max Sams, W.C. Rasnick and Stevie Burrough. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Carter County Rescue Squad, employees of the City of Elizabethton, employees and former employees of the Elizabethton Police Department, members of the Elizabethton Car Club, Dr. Jaishankar and nurse Whitney, Dr. Sheryl Pack and nurse Pam, Dr. Keith Morley and Michelle, Junior White, Eddie Cornett, John Paul Stalcup, Rick Osborne, Coz Roberts and Ernest Elliott. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at his residence.
