Everyone is invited on a trip to Neverland with the Watts Dance Studio Showcase Dancers Saturday night.
The Showcase Dancers will present their annual dance musical stage production “Peter Pan” at 7 p.m. in the gym at Harold McCormick Elementary.
This year marks the 26th year for the annual show, instructor Chrisann Watts Tull said. The show started as a way to bring different art forms together as one production for school age children.
“When it started, we wanted to put literature and performing arts together,” Tull said. “We wanted children to be able to read a story and then watch it come to life. It was amazing how they would respond. We brought our show to the schools at first, and then we started bringing it to the community.”
Peter Pan tells the story of Wendy Darling, who mesmerizes her brothers every night with bedtime tales of the fearsome Captain Hook. The children become the heroes of an even greater story when Peter Pan flies into their nursery one night and leads them over moonlit rooftops through a galaxy of stars and to the lush jungles of Neverland.
Wendy and her brothers join Peter and the Lost Boys in an exhilarating life free of grown-up rules while also facing the inevitable showdown with Hook and his bloodthirsty pirates.
“It is a story that everyone is familiar with,” Tull said. “It is a childhood and family favorite.”
The 62 dancers in the Showcase group have been preparing for the show since the first of the year, Tull said.
“There has been a lot of hard work and a lot rehearsals,” she said. “It has been fun and they are ready to put on the show.”
The production is appropriate for children of all ages and admission to the show is free, Tull said. The musical will include a variety of different dance styles, tumbling and aerial moves.
“The show has it all,” Tull said. “That is one of the big focuses of Watts Dance Studio — to teach many different dance forms.”
The cast will include Maggie Booher as Peter Pan, Sutton Coffey as Captain Hook, Meredith Roaten as Wendy, Brittany Barnett as Tom, Abigail Anderson as Michael, Peyton Snell as Tiger Lilly, Sidney Waugh as the Mermaid, Hannah Bowers as Tinkerbell and Grace Roberts as the Shadow.
Watts Dance Studio Showcase Dancers have had multiple performances at Disney’s Magic Kingdom and regional festivals. The group has also performed for the Nassau Independence Day Celebration in the Bahamas and was featured in shows onboard Premier Cruise Lines’ Big Red Boat and on Carnival Cruise Lines. The Showcase dancers include students from all the Carter County, Elizabethton and Johnson City schools.
