Jay N. Bowers

Jay N. Bowers, 94, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, from his residence, following a brief illness.
Mr. Bowers was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Charlie D. and Eliza Jane Pierce Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Oliver Bowers, in 2007; six sisters, Ellen Parks, Carmie Oliver, Bonnie Oliver, Eva Pearl Bowers, Elvira Vivian Bowers and Gladys Lynch; and three brothers, Stanley, Joe and Charles Bowers.
Mr. Bowers was retired from East Tennessee Chair Company. He was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church but was currently attending Zion Baptist Church. He loved making his wood crafts, especially the tulips and angels, which he would give to his friends, family, caregivers, nursing home residents and anyone else that he came in contact with.
Survivors include six daughters, JoAnn Hess and husband Avery, Gray, Ga., Wanda Dougherty and husband Mike, Gate City, Va., Margaret Herman and husband Tracy, Johnson City, Linda Lunceford and husband Jerry, Elizabethton, Dorothy Williams and husband Brent, Johnson City, and Betty Brewer, Elizabethton; three sons, Frank Bowers and wife Sherrie, Attica, Mich., J.C. Bowers and wife Roberta, and James Bowers, all of Elizabethton; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Julia Willen of Virginia. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Jay N. Bowers will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 12, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Jerry Honeycutt officiating. Special music will be under the direction of Becky Osborne and great-granddaughter, Jayci Bowers. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1 until 2 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The graveside service will follow in the Scalf Cemetery with Rev. Alan King officiating. Active pallbearers will be Jeremy Nave, Alex Campbell, Todd Bowers, James Brewer, Keith Combs, Ronnie Hall, Phillip Nave and Forrest Hall. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and neighbors. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Amedisys Hospice, Dr. Israel Garcia and Dr. David Fenner for the love and care shown to Mr. Bowers during his illness.
