It’s been a good summer for Elizabethton’s Franklin Pool.
And to celebrate, the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department is inviting the public to a free Big Splash pool party on Sunday, Aug. 31, from 1-5 p.m.
Athletic Director David Nanney said the now-annual pool party, which started last year, was a way for the department to showcase the pool facility to the public.
“We did great this year,” Nanney said. “We had a good turnout all year, and it was a lot of fun. The Splash Party is a good opportunity to come out and see what we have to offer.”
The pool opened on Memorial Day and will close for the season on Labor Day. From now until closing day, the pool is only open on weekends.
“We have had a really good year,” he said. “There were groups from all around the area that came, as well as our everyday patrons.”
The pool did have some upgrades this year with a new filtration system and picnic tables.
Park and Recreation Director Mike Mains said the open green space surrounding the pool was a favorite for families and community groups that visited the facility.
“They really enjoy the quietness with the state park right next door,” Mains said. “People bring blankets and have picnics, and the children can play games when they’re not in the pool.”
Nanney said in the future the department would like to add a Splash Pad play area to expand opportunities for younger children to enjoy the pool.
The Splash Party on Aug. 31 will feature free swim time, inflatables, face painting and music.
Nanney said the party was started last year as part of the department’s plan to feature different city parks to the public and it was a hit with the community.
